Overview and background

From 21 to 23 March 2023, the Alioune Blondin BEYE Peacekeeping School held a high-level international seminar in its conference room on the theme “Intercultural and interfaith dialogue: what strategies for lasting peace in the Sahel?”.

Funded by the Federal Republic of Germany, the seminar brought together eminent specialists drawn from traditional authorities, religious leaders, senior

government officials, experts in security, development and civil society, as well as academics recognised nationally and internationally for both their scientific contributions and their practical involvement in stabilisation efforts in the Sahel. Participants came from the Sahel countries (Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Chad), Algeria and Morocco. They examined the mechanisms and specific contributions of intercultural and interfaith dialogue to

lasting peace in the Sahel. Intercultural and interfaith dialogue can lead to shifts in attitudes and to mobilisation to address the root causes of the crisis in the Sahel.
